Music & Performing Arts
Our Statement of Intent
Music and singing have a high profile at Stanford Primary School, and we aim to provide every child with exciting, inspiring and enriching musical experiences that are an active and influential part of everyday school life.
We believe that music has the power to stimulate creativity, imagination and expression, allowing children to dream, be inspired and develop a deeper appreciation of the world around them.
Our music curriculum focuses on developing every child’s creativity and musicality through four key skills: singing, playing, composing and listening. These skills are interwoven throughout each unit rather than taught as discrete areas, providing children with a rich and varied musical experience. All children receive regular music lessons taught by a specialist teacher, where they develop their ability to perform, explore different musical styles and begin to read music and understand rhythmic notation through playing instruments such as the recorder, ukulele and xylophone.
Singing is central to our musical experiences, and we want our children to sing their way through their time at Stanford. Our thriving school choir performs at school events and local music festivals, while music assemblies provide further opportunities for children to sing and share their musical talents. Children also have the opportunity, through private arrangements with local authority peripatetic teachers, to learn a range of instruments including violin, guitar, piano, keyboard, ukulele, drums and harmonica.
Through assemblies, concerts and other performances, children are encouraged to develop confidence, pride and enjoyment in sharing their music with others. We want every child to develop a lifelong love and appreciation of music, while recognising its unique ability to engage the whole brain, inspire creativity and enrich their lives.
Expressive Arts and Design - Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage EYFS 2021
The development of children’s artistic and cultural awareness supports their imagination and creativity. It is important that children have regular opportunities to engage with the arts, enabling them to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. The quality and variety of what children see, hear and participate in is crucial for developing their understanding, self-expression, vocabulary and ability to communicate through the arts. The frequency, repetition and depth of their experiences are fundamental to their progress in interpreting and appreciating what they hear, respond to and observe.
Purpose of Study – National Curriculum 2014
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.
